Another reason for mountain bikings growing appeal is the sheer breadth of places to ride, and types of experiences you can have as a rider.
I think a common pitfall for people looking to get into mountain biking is the way the sport is portrayed in the media, said Dan Meyer, the deputy editor of the nonprofit Adventure Cycling Associations magazine. Youll see people screaming down a mountain, hitting huge jumps and doing tricks. Now, thats a certain part of mountain biking. But a lot of it is about getting out in the woods, enjoying nature, exploring new skills.
The screaming down a mountain variety often relates to lift- or shuttle-assisted mountain biking, which has become increasingly popular at ski resorts in summer months. Whistler Blackcomb, in British Columbia, was one of the first ski resorts to build out bike-friendly chairlifts, shuttles, bike shops and more to increase its off-season business. It did this so successfully that other ski mountains in North America followed suit. Increasingly, these spots have expanded their offerings to appeal to beginners, with cycling-specific bunny slopes for new riders.
Aside from more trails at ski resorts, the IMBA, which focuses on trail development around the United States, estimates that in 2020 more than 2,000 miles of new trails were constructed by local organizations, land trusts, state land managers and more.

Venice has a deep history in tourism. It has been in the Grand Tour since the 1600s and 1700s. Our association of tour guides in Venice dates back to the end of the 1970s. So, for a city that is so deeply involved in the tourism sector, this pandemic has been a big shock and its still a dramatic situation.
I keep an Excel spreadsheet of my services and when I look at 2019, I see that I gave 290 tours all year round. In 2020, I gave just 55.
We are lucky because we have some savings, so I am not worried about tomorrow, but I am worried about what happens after tomorrow. I know we can manage until the end of this year with this crisis, but we have two children, and we need to think about their future.
It seems that things will come back slowly, which is worrying because there will not be as much work to go around. We are used to millions of tourists each year, thousands on a daily basis, but now you see very little activity, and tour guides find themselves in a desperate situation some of them going to the train station holding up signs.

Last summer, Cat Rainwater was overweight and going through menopause at an accelerated clip. That, on top of the stresses of pandemic lockdown, was leading to a mental health crisis.
I was suicidal, said Ms. Rainwater, 49, a mortgage underwriter based in Austin, Texas. My sister was taking care of me and she said, We have got to get you active.
She started trail running, until she injured her knee.
Meanwhile, all of these mountain bikers were just whizzing past me, Ms. Rainwater said. I found the bike community and its been love since then.
She connected with Austins mountain bike community via Facebook, and started meeting up for weekly group rides. She was struck by how welcoming other bikers were, regardless of age or skill level. The more she rode, the better she felt.
I mean it when I say that mountain biking saved my life, said Ms. Rainwater, who is planning a trip to Bentonville, Ark., with new mountain biking friends for later this year. I hadnt ridden a bicycle since I was a little kid, but theres something about getting on the trails. I feel like Im 13 again.

A History Of Mountain Biking
Mountain biking originated in the hills of Marin County, Calif.
Back in the mid-70s, there was this group that were taking old, 1950s beach cruisers and putting motorcycle parts on them, said Eric Bjorling, the brand director of Trek Bikes, a bike manufacturer and distributor based in Waterloo, Wis. They were too heavy to ride uphill. Theyd push them up Mount Tamalpais and race them down.
Those early tinkerers began designing and building bikes specifically for bombing down hills and riding off-road, leading to the development of a dedicated industry and a surge in interest in mountain biking in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Mountain bikings more recent resurgence is largely attributed to its development as a coed high school team sport across the country, through NICA, the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, which launched in 2009. Its not just that there are more riders than there were before there are more riders keen to stick with the sport for years .

Legitimate question – Im wondering if that is necessarily a positive move on the part of NYT to scrap it. I totally understand the scope of the current global climate, I would have thought that having something for people to look forward to, to daydream about is a good thing – especially considering mental health issues being so prevalent under lockdown circumstances
I think this has also been done with the sports section and is the print version only – not necessarily a suspension of coverage.
While I have some nostalgia for reading “real” print I think a lot of the readership has migrated on-line and digital subscriptions have shown growth.
Its a suspension of coverage due to the fact people arent travelling and wont be travelling for a while. It did seem indiffernet for them to make an article about some luxury travel location while New Yorkers were hunkered down and many worrying about their future
And Yes the Sports section is also being suspended, but that likely because there really arent many sports stories . They were scrapping the bottom of the barrell for sports stories

The first blow to my career came before the pandemic, in September 2019, when the Thomas Cook group collapsed. That was my first commercial pilot role and I had worked for them for 11 years before I lost my job.
Thankfully, the industry was quite buoyant at that time and I managed to get a job in January last year with a small company called Titan Airways that specializes in V.I.P. charter work and high-end travel.
Then the pandemic hit in March. They realized there was no money coming in for the foreseeable future, so they let me go. In the aviation industry, it is common for the last one to join to be the first one to leave.
I couldnt believe it. I have a partner, two small children and a mortgage. I knew I wasnt going to get another flying job with the way the travel industry was, so I had to look for something that would bring in any sort of income. In May, I managed to get a job as a delivery driver for Ocado, the U.K. online supermarket.
I took an 80 percent pay cut from my pilot job. We had to go through our finances and shave off everything that wasnt a necessity like private health care, subscriptions, gym memberships. It has been a really trying time to live on one salary, which is effectively minimum wage. The numbers dont always match up on a monthly basis in terms of what comes in and what goes out, even after selling my car and taking other measures to save money.

My take
1. This is not good for the Oilers or their fans. That was a serious head butt from Nurse.
2. If youre defending Nurse, Id suggest you apply the McDavid rule to this. If that was Sean Durzi or Mikey Anderson headbutting McDavid like that, would you call for a suspension? I would.
3. Nurse hasnt been as physical against the Kings as I would have expected, but thats almost certainly due to him coming off a lower body injury. He does not appear to be moving completely freely on the ice yet, though his skating improves each game. All that said, hes been playing well on the attack and holding his own at even strength. His one game suspension is a huge loss for the Oilers.
