History Of Napa Valley

Modular Home

One of the major wine regions of the world, Napa Valley is a highly popular tourist destination in California. The valley enjoys a beautiful Mediterranean climate, so its no surprise that it has long been a prime agricultural area.

Until the early 1800s, Napa Valley was chiefly populated by a few indigenous tribes when it was broken into several, very large land grants. In 1836, George C. Yount obtained the Mexican grant Rancho Caymus. He established a sawmill and grain mill and, importantly, was the first person said to have planted a vineyard in Napa County. It is in his name that the town of Yountville was put on the map. Similarly, Rutherford was named after another wine grower from the mid-1800s.

Near the same time, Napas eastern hills became the locus of the California silver rush and silver and quicksilver mining. During this time the town of Napa was established. The area soon found another claim to fame in the mid-1880s when the town of Calistoga was founded at the foot of Mount Saint Helena and became known as a resort area for its many natural, mineral hot springs.

With its close proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area, Napa attracts nearly 5 million visitors annually. To learn more about Napa wine region, visit these other great resources online:

Fine Wine Film And Feasts In Napa

If you’re visiting Napa Valley, check whether your stay will overlap with one of its various festivals and special events. Festival Napa Valley is held every summer, with over 200 musicians, wineries, vintners, restaurants, and theaters taking part. Usually held in July, the festival also has year-round educational programming. The main July event, however, is a series of musical events and performing arts, from classical and jazz music to theater and dance. It attracts tens of thousands of guests and musicians from all over the country as well as abroad. These performances are often held in conjunction with daily vintner’s luncheons and patron dinners, celebrating the region’s rich eating and drinking options.

Meanwhile, at the Napa Valley Film Festival every November, visitors can enjoy screenings, previews, and live panels, not to mention the opportunity to rub shoulders with celebrities! There are also several culinary festivals throughout the year. Check out the Napa Truffle Festival and Napa Restaurant Week in January, Calistoga’s Harvest Table in September, and Napa’s Culinary Crawls throughout the year.

Fun Girls Weekend In Wine Country

Travelling with 5 other ladies with different personalities and different expectations, yet we all managed to have a blast in Napa while staying at this wonderful home. We were visiting from New York and South Florida and all wanted to move to Napa once we set sight on this resort. We took full advantage of the fireplace in the courtyard each night of our stay and did our own cooking in the impressive kitchen. There was a little confusion initially about which of the owner’s two homes we were assigned to, but the discrepancy was resolved to our satisfaction by the owner. I would definitely stay here again – hope to get a chance to try the Bocci.
