Our Disney Vacation Club Review: A Summary
The Disney Vacation Club is a timeshare program. While its ostensibly more flexible than traditional timeshares, it still represents an important financial commitment.
One of the first things to ask yourself if youre thinking about getting a DVC membership is whether youre ready to make this commitment.
Guide To Buying A Disney Vacation Club Contract
Aug 18, 2017 Let me explain. Every existing DVC contract will last until at least 2042. Thats 25 years from now! Others will last more than 20 years past
Typically, DVC sets expiration dates 50 years from the construction date of a building. It is important to note, however, that Old Key West contracts may have
Membership Has an End Date The person who sold us our membership explained this really well and it will be in your contract that you sign. The length
Tour & Event Discounts
This is a pretty broad category, but Disney Vacation Club members receive a 15% discount on theme park tours . Members also received flat-rate discounts on some shows .
Then there are discounts on special events. This mainly applies to Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party. At least, thats how we use our member tour/event discount most frequently.
This also extends to a bunch of other stuff, including events during the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, among other things. Its best to check the DVC website before booking anything, as this changes.

How Much Does A Disney Vacation Club Cost
On average, the one-time fee for the Disney Vacation Club, if bought new, will be around $25,000, and the closing costs will be around $500. This price range would give you around 160 membership points. To break it down, if you were to buy from the DVC direct, then you should be prepared to pay $140
Who Is Dvc Right For
If youre still unsure whether membership in the Disney Vacation Club is suitable for you, thats okay. As we have said a couple of times, it is a significant commitment. Well finish up with a handy list of questions to ask yourself to help evaluate whether you should look into it further.
- Do you like Disney? Lets face it the DVC wouldnt be as successful as it is if it wasnt a fantastic option for Disney-goers. While you can use your membership outside of Disney, if you dont regularly plan to visit Disneys properties, it probably wont end up being your best option. Either way, just make sure to compare it to some other options.
In addition, you want to feel good about the companies with whom you do business. Find a company thats compatible with your lifestyle all the way around.
- Can you afford it? The bottom line is, its expensive. Its also a pretty big financial commitment after all, youll be a member for 50 years. Even if your membership is paid in full, you will still owe annual dues that rise every year. As we stated above, nothing can drain the joy out of your vacation, quite like knowing you cant afford it. Whats more, if your membership goes into foreclosure, it will drastically damage your credit score.

How Much Does Disney Vacation Club Cost
The cost of a Disney Vacation Club membership is dependent on a few factors. Whether you purchase directly from Disney or on the resale market, you are required to pay yearly maintenance fees on your home resort.
First, you have to purchase points. Unlike most timeshare offerings where you purchase a specific week, Disney gives you a great deal of flexibility by allowing you to buy points that are then redeemed when you want to vacation. The point value of a room can vary depending on the type of room, the resort, and the time of year. For example, if you want a preferred deluxe studio at Saratoga Springs during the month of January for 1 week, it would cost you 97 points. The same room at the same resort over Christmas break will cost you 166 points.
The cost you will pay for those points is also dependent on a few factors. All of the 14 current Disney Vacation Club Resorts have a different value. If youre looking at resale contracts, the aforementioned Saratoga Springs Resort would cost between $97 and $110 per point based on the contract. By contrast, a resale contract at the Grand Floridian Villas can average around $160 per point. The reason your home resort is so important though, is that you have a booking window of up to 11-months at your home resort versus 7-months in advance at any other DVC location. For popular resorts , that 4-month booking window is often the difference between finding a room at the resort you want and not finding that room.
How Much Is Disney Vacation Club
As a DVC member, youre buying a share of a Disney resort.
The resort you invest in wont affect your future travel since you can use your points to travel anywhere within the DVC network.
However, the resort you invest in can affect the cost of the membership, which is why its important to compare the different options available.

Is The Disney Vacation Club Worth It
Do you plan to vacation at Walt Disney World at least every other year?
If the answer is yes then the DVC is something you need to consider, especially if youre a young family. My husband and I honeymooned at Walt Disney World. We considered DVC membership back then but decided it wasnt a fit for us. We married in our early 40s. I had one daughter in high school. I didnt see frequent trips to Disney in the cards for us.
Surprise, surprise. We became parents again in our late 40s and frequent trips to Disney suddenly became more attractive.
However you look at it, frequent trips to Walt Disney World are definitely on the table. If that doesnt sound do-able to you, then you might want to take a hard look at whether DVC is right for you.
Where To Buy Discounted Disney World Tickets
We recommend purchasing your Disney tickets through Get Away Today. Not only does the company have the lowest prices, it offers a best price guarantee. If you ever find park tickets cheaper, Get Away Today wont just match the price, the company will beat it. If you call to make your purchase be sure to mention TravelingMom!

What Is Disney Vacation Club
Disney Vacation Club is Disneys own timeshare vacation club that gives owners priority access to stay in top Disney resorts in Orlando, Hilton Head Island, California, Hawaii, and Vero Beach. With its first resort opening in 1991, Disney Vacation Club has grown in size over the last 30 years and now includes fifteen resorts across the country. To become an owner or member of DVC, you must purchase DVC points either directly from Disney or on the DVC resale market.
Why Should I Join Dvc
Disney outlines several benefits to joining Disney Vacation club, including the value of points, potential savings, and flexibility of each vacation.
When you become a DVC member, you lock in the price of the points at the time of purchase. This means that while prices may increase over the years, your cost stays the same as it was the day you purchased your points. Points have a high value because they can be used at a variety of DVC Resorts on several types of accommodations, including a studio and one-, two-, or three-bedroom villas.
DVC vacations are also flexible, as members are never obligated to stay at a specific resort during a certain time of year or for a certain period of time. DVC members can use their points however they want, wherever they want, according to their use year. You can also put bank points to be used the following year, or borrow points from a future year to be used during the current year. Take a look at the many flexible ways DVC members can use their points.
Disney Vacation Club members also receive exclusive benefits. Members can save up to 50% on Disney Vacation Club Resort accommodations over the life of their membership, compared to the same vacation at a non-discounted rental rate. Members also gain access to DVC-only events, as well as exclusive discounts on vacations, dining opportunities, merchandise, Disney Parks tours, and more. Visit the DVC website to learn about the current offerings for DVC members.

Dvc Cost Vs Paying Cash For Your Resort Stay
Lets say you buy 160 points at Saratoga Springs Resort. For purposes of this example, 160 points would cover 11 nights of vacation in a Saratoga Springs Studio unit: a 6-night stay in Magic Season and a 5-night stay in Choice season. These roughly correspond with regular season for cash pricing of resort rooms.
- Your dues for 160 Saratoga Springs Resort points are $1,083 in 2020, which pays in advance for points that straddle 2020 and 2021.
- If you rented points from an owner to stay in a Saratoga Springs studio for the same dates at $19 a point, it would cost you $3,040.
- Maybe youd be just as happy staying in the least expensive Disney Deluxe hotel room, and youre able to get a modest discount on the hotel room. If you stayed at Wilderness Lodge in Regular Season with a 25% discount, 11 nights would cost you $4,592 with tax in 2021.
- If you paid the full rack rate charged by Disney to stay in a Saratoga Springs studio for 11 nights in Regular season, it would cost you $5,687 with tax in 2021.
All told, the $1,083 in dues compares pretty favorably to the much higher cost of $4,500+ to stay in a discounted cash room, or even the $3,000+ it would cost to rent the points from an owner.

How Can I Save Money
Buying a Disney timeshare used is going to potentially save you more than 50 percent on your purchase. If you are heavily considering this club, consider going the used route.
Be sure to crunch the numbers ahead of time. As long as you think you are going to be able to take full advantage year after year, it may be worth the investment. However, not taking advantage of the opportunities provided by the Disney Vacation Club will result in wasted money.
- If you cannot afford the costs up front, Disney does offer low-cost financing options for up to ten years.
- If youre questioning if its worth it, here are a few questions to ask yourself first: Do I need to take out a loan? Will you visit at least once a year for the next 10 years? As long as you think you can come out ahead by doing the math, then it may be a decent investment however, if youre questioning it, youre better off reserving a room as you please without any monthly maintenance commitments.
- The DVC does offer financing options in one, three, five, seven and 10-year increments.

Opting Out: How To Sell Your Dvc Membership
Annoyingly, Disney doesnt offer much flexibility with changing or canceling your membership. If you want to opt-out of your DVC membership, your best bet is to resell it.
The good news is that there is a market for reselling DVC points and DVC memberships, and you can get help from companies that specialize in offering this service. However, Disney will have to review and approve the transaction.
Keep in mind that a Disney Vacation Club membership is a long-term commitment.
Yes, there is a lack of flexibility. But keeping the membership for 30 to 40 years means youll be able to enjoy staying at Disney resorts with your grandchildren or let your adult children use your membership.

The Basics Of Disney Vacation Club
Simply put, the Disney Vacation Club is a timeshare program in which members purchase an ownership interest in a DVC property such as Disneys Riviera Resort at Walt Disney World. The resort would become their home base for future visits.
In practice, however, members are not actually tied to any single property and are free to book vacations at both DVC and non-DVC resorts. Nor are they obliged to book a certain type of accommodations, plan their trips at a particular time of year, or commit to a certain number of days each year.
Instead, the program is based on a points system. Members purchase a minimum of 100 points, which are good for 50 years. Then they have the flexibility to access their bank of points and plan getaways.
