Local Woman Becomes Part Of Virtual Walking World Record

Cowetan Terrie Promis walks with a purpose earning medals through logging the miles she walks every day and improving her health.
Terrie Promis has long loved to walk, but her walking took on a different purpose after her mother passed away and Promis felt her own COPD starting to get worse.
Promis has asthma, and a few years ago was diagnosed with COPD. Her mother, who also had COPD, passed away in early 2021. Though it wasn’t COPD that killed her, Promis remembered so many times watching her mother struggle to breath.

She wasn’t about to let that happen to her. Her pulmonologist said she needed more exercise. Promis already worked out on her elliptical machine daily and walked, but she redoubled her efforts.
Promis son told her, You’ve got to have a purpose walk for a purpose. That’s what gets you fired up, she said. And it is.”
She found out about virtual walks and runs and found participating in them inspired her to walk more a lot more. Her son had given her a smart watch for her birthday the year before, and it tracked her steps. Soon, she was on her way virtually.
A shot at a Guinness World Record
In the fall, Promis participated in a worldwide attempt to set a world record for the most people participating in a virtual 10K. The attempt was successful, and now Promis is part of a Guinness World Record.

Washington Officially Has A New All

Washington officially has a new all-time maximum temperature record.
The new record is 120 degrees, set in Hanford on June 29, 2021, during last summers heat wave, according to the State Climate Extremes Committee. It breaks the old record of 118 set in Wahluke on July 24, 1928, and in Ice Harbor Dam on Aug. 5, 1961.
The committee verified the record in December in an unanimous vote, according to the National Weather Service. The group met four times last year to review temperature reports, and issued a report about its review last week.
Washington-Maximum-Temperature
The committee said the heat wave was the result of a persistent ridge of high pressure, a widespread drought and intense June solar radiation.
In total, 128 all-time highest maximum temperature records were broken or tied in Washington and 116 in Oregon from June 25-30, 2021.
The State Climate Extremes Committee also verified that Oregon tied its maximum temperature record with 119 degrees at Pelton Dam and Moody Farms Agrimet on June 29, 2021. It ties the old record of 119 at Prineville on July 29, 1898, and Pendleton on Aug. 10, 1898.

Journal News To Cease Saturday Print Publication Expands Digital Access
The Journal News in March will cease print publication on Saturdays — for our home delivery and single-copy editions.
Instead, we will provide subscribers with a full digital replica of the newspaper on Saturdays. This E-newspaper will be filled with the same local, regional and national news, high school and professional sports, advertising and features such as comics and puzzles that you would find in print on Saturdays.
Home-delivery customers will continue to receive newspapers delivered to their homes all other days for which they subscribe. These delivery times will not change. Newsstand sales will be offered daily Sundays through Fridays.
For some time now, in addition to being a daily newspaper, lohud has been a digital site, a mobile app, social media service, multimedia provider and more, Executive Editor Mary Dolan said, noting that with each passing year more subscribers have accessed news content on mobile phones and other digital devices.
We appreciate that for many of our readers print is a cherished tradition, but it is time to make a strategic change that reflects the new ways most of customers and advertisers access media, Dolan said. Weve taken care to ensure that our subscribers will continue to be provided with the content that they look forward to every day, and that we remain a vital part of the fabric of our community.

At the end of last year, the California Employment Development Department launched a clawback program to prove that about 1.4 million people with federal pandemic unemployment support have worked or are looking for a job retroactively.
