Collier County To Crack Down On Vacation Rentals
Collier County will crack down on vacation home rentals.
On Tuesday, county commissioners voted 4-1 to direct county staff to enforce existing rules that ban owners from renting their homes for less than six months in most residential areas outside city limits.
Code enforcers haven’t actively policed the situation but will get more aggressive now, especially with the worst offenders.
“We want to go after the most intrusive first,” said Commissioner Burt Saunders, referring to owners who rent their homes daily or weekly and those generating the most complaints.
Saunders made the motion to enforce the existing regulations, which include fines for offenders. Commissioner Penny Taylor seconded it, saying the surge in vacation rentals can’t go unchecked and she’s all for fines.
“We need to move on this,” she said. “It’s enough.”
The county’s Tourist Development Council suggested more analysis was needed to make a decision about what should be done to curb the growing number of rentals and recommended the county consider holding meetings with stakeholders to get more information.
However, Taylor disagreed.
“We don’t need any more meetings to figure out what to do,” she said. “The problem needs to be solved.”
The impact from rentals doesn’t just affect neighbors, but neighborhoods, Taylor said, especially when investors buy three or four of them on the same street or in the same community to rent to tourists.
