I’m sure this question has been asked and answered in this forum, but I made it through about 10 pages when I searched this topic and didn’t see what I needed–I apologize in advance if my lack of patience violated any TA policies :).
I need advice on which travel site is best to book a week-long, all-inclusive vacation at either the Iberostar or Palace resorts in Cancun-Riviera Maya for 2 families from Houston, TX in July, 2013 Alternatively, should I use a travel agent, and if so, any recommendations?

There are a few on here like ktown, bk_t1, BradJill, Coolnerd and Lex who are all battle hardened travel guys for the Americas who maybe able to offer you further advice too.

I haven’t booked a Mexico vacation in a few years, but in the past I found savings in booking a flight/ hotel package. I would start by checking packages thru popular airlines from your departure city. All the airlines have vacation packages listed on their websites.
Then I would go to popular sites like Expedia or Travelocity and do some price comparison. You could even use a search engine like Kayak to compare prices. If prices are close I would tend to favor booking directly with the airline.

Are All Inclusive Vacations Worth It
Generally yes, provided you eat, drink, and sightsee like an average person. Even if you dont drink alcohol the value of the meals alone if you stay on the resort is usually worth it alone. Its like making a bulk deal with one restaurant for 21 meals a week. If you eat a lot less, dont drink alcohol, and spend a lot of time off the resort, its not for you.
Can I Add A Person To My All Inclusive Room
Yes, provided it meets the occupancy and age requirements of the room category, and done in advance. It is far more difficult to do at the resort. This is called a change or deviation as the extra person may include the same or different flight, or no flight. Some lead in room categories only accommodate two people, so sometimes a room upgrade is required adding more cost for the first two people.

More and more resorts are offering WiFi included and it changes by the year and month. The quality of the connection varies some offer it only in selected areas, some offer it resort wide but the quality is so poor its almost unusable, then is upgraded a few months later. The chain resorts and higher end all inclusives tend to offer better WiFi for their guests including some that are completely open and allow for free VoIP calls to North America. It should be a factor in your decision but not the prime one, unless you absolutely need a quality connection to stay in touch at work. Check with your wireless provider for a good roaming package it can fill in those gaps if the WiFi is spotty.

What Should I Pack Or Bring On An All Inclusive Vacation
Its casual. Shorts and tee shirts are often fine in the buffets. Khakis, golf shirts, deck shoes are acceptable for most sit down/premium restaurants, but at some high end all inclusive resorts some long sleeved shirts for dinner are more appropriate. Bathing suits alone are only acceptable at pool bars and poolside snack huts. You dont need much, but good sunscreen and hats are recommended. Consider the electricity if curling irons and hair straighteners. For computers, phones, CPAP machines, an adaptor is fine for 220V.
