Lava Lava Island: Vacaation Destination For Bible Education
The church’s front door was surrounded by palm trees, a volcanoglowed next to the pulpit and the pastor wore shorts, a floweredshirt and a pith helmet.
It was all part of the fun on Lava Island last week as childrenattended a vacation Bible school at the Three Rivers Bible Churchin North Kelso.
“One of the reasons VBS appeals to children is you set up afantasy world for them,” said Doug Hepting, the church’sminister.
“We try to communicate the main message of the Bible,” Heptingsaid. But VBS has to be fun, too. So children play games outside,including whacking each other with foam swords, along with singingreligious songs and hearing about Jesus.
This year, several local churches have based their VBS on acurriculum plan called “Lava Lava Island Where Jesus’ LoveFlows.”
“We took some ideas,” said Mindy Thornton, who with Jan Bakerwas co-leader of the school. “Most of it we made up on ourown.”

Just as the sands on the beach are constantly shifting, our world is constantly changing. All that change can leave us frustrated! When everything is shifting sand around us, we can stand firm knowing our foundation is in Jesus.

Day 2: Sandal Cracker
Use any rectangular cracker and spread cheese, hummus or even peanut butter on top. We used potato strings to make the sandal straps, but you could use any thinly cut vegetable.

Three Rivers Bible Church didn’t have to build their tropicalisland from scratch the Kelso United Methodist Church passed onmaterials after using the same props earlier this summer. Theisland will travel further to the Abernathy Assembly of God for yetanother VBS.
Still, it took the 16 adult volunteers more than a third ofthe Bible Church’s members a good month to get ready. “It was amonumental effort,” Hepting said.
The church’s main hall was draped with paper foliage amid thepalm trees, with monkeys and bright birds here and there. On stagewas the volcano that appeared to be erupting, thanks to a fan andred paper.
It was built before last Sunday’s service. “I said, ‘It’s ajungle out there,’ ” Hepting recalled.
The hallway to the Critter Craft Cage was transformed into atunnel illuminated by black light, with a screaming monkeyaccosting all who dared enter.
On Tuesday, 41 children arrived, one more than the goal. “Iprayed for 50,” Hepting said, “but they said don’t pray for 50.We’re only prepared for 40.”
After making necklaces with plastic flowers, it was time for”tropical treats” juice and cookies. “Let’s close our eyes andbow our heads,” said volunteer Debbi Bergman. When she finishedleading grace, a chorus of “AMEN” erupted from the kids.
“They need to work together to do God’s will,” Thorntonsaid.
Five-year-old Lindsey Zintz liked the singing and dancing.

This year First Presbyterian Church, Jackson is overflowing with excitement as we explore LAVA LAVA ISLAND on June 16-19th Lava Lava Island will provide fun, memorable Bible-learning activities for kids 4 years old through 5th grade. Each day kids will sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, nibble Tropical Treats, take on a Daily Challenge to let Jesus love flow home, experience electrifying Bible adventures, and create Bible Point Crafts theyll take home and play with all summer long!

Registration Open Now Vbs 2019 Will Be July 15
This years theme is Lava Lava Island by Group Publishing , and the format will be as usual: Dinner from 5:00 5:45pm , music and activities from 5:45-8:30pm.
This VBS is designed for ages 4 and up. 3-year-olds are welcome to attend if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Middle school and high school age children are able to serve as volunteer helpers, if they wish.
If you cant make it all 5 days, thats no problem! Each day has its own discrete topic and Bible story, so join us whichever days you are able. A volunteer who cant make is all 5 days is no problem, too, a substitute will be provided. There is a nursery available for young children of volunteers.
