Thanksgiving coincides with the start of Vermonts skiing season, and theres no better place to celebrate than Jeffersonville. Bromley Mountain Ski Resort and Killington Ski Area are worth checking out, but the highlight resort is definitely Smugglers Notch, with a vast array of different ski terrains, and special packages available for those staying over Thanksgiving weekend.

Knowing all the different members of my family, here are the most important things Im looking for in a resort to host my family:
- Activities that appeal to the whole family. With ages ranging from my baby boomer parents to toddler niece, as a family we have almost every decade covered.
- Different options for sleeping rooms. Each individual family has its own needs for space and amenities. My parents need less space than my family of four.
- Unique holiday experiences. It is a long weekend getaway but it is also a Thanksgiving family getaway so we want plenty of fall foliage and activities for families with some traditional Thanksgiving aspects, like a full-service Thanksgiving Dinner. It wouldnt hurt to have a day after Christmas tree lighting and ice skating party either.
- Easily accessible by airplane. Because my family lives everywhere from Florida to California, I didnt limit the location. But I did rule out locations that would require difficult travel, such as commuter planes or long car rides from an airport. Since its only a four-day weekend, we also dont want to travel too far no long flights to Hawaii, for instance. And we are sticking with United States Thanksgiving destinations. No Mexico all-inclusives right now.

Thanksgiving In New York City

Thanksgiving is a special time to visit New York City. It is home to the iconic Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade, watched on TV by over 50 million people each year. Its fun to watch in-person to see all the huge balloons, elaborate floats, and celebrities.
If you feel like the parade route will be too crowded, you can get a closeup view of the balloons as they are being blown up by the Natural History Museum the day before.
A lot of popular NYC tourist attractions will close on Thanksgiving Day, but there are still a few more family-friendly things to do. Central Park will be less crowded than normal so it would be lovely to walk around there.
Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is one of the few museums open on Thanksgiving Day. There are also usually a few Broadway shows with Thanksgiving performances.
While the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree wont be lit for another week, you can still go ice skating on the iconic rink.
A lot of restaurants will also be closed Thanksgiving Day so those that are open will be busy. Many will have a special Thanksgiving menu but you will need to make a reservation in advance.
The rest of the weekend most attractions and tours will be back to normal business hours but it is always best to double-check. The weather can be quite cold in NYC during this time of year so be sure to pack some warm clothes.
