Columbia River Gorge Oregon
The Pacific Northwest is known for its natural beauty and varying landscapes. One season that does not disappoint is the fall, and one location that should be added to your must-see list is the Columbia River Gorge.
This 80-mile canyon along the Columbia River is an outdoor lovers paradise full of incredible viewpoints, hiking, and wine tasting.
When visiting in the fall, you are presented with the unique opportunity to experience Hood Rivers Fruit Loop during the Fall harvest.
The Fruit Loop is a 35-mile scenic drive that leads you out from the Columbia River into Hood River and back past local farms, produce stands, wineries, breweries, and more.
Maps are provided both online and anywhere along the loop to make the most of your drive. Apple and pear picking is the ultimate fall activity, and Kiyokawa Orchards is the crown jewel of the area.
A visit during the fall also provides the fun of pumpkin patches and corn mazes, to which Packer Farm has both.
And the perfect way to break up and end your day is by stopping at one of the many wineries or a cider millThe Gorge White House is full of charm with a variety of unique cider flavors.
Cathedral Ridge Winery has a fantastic view, and in the fall, the colors of the vines into the trees blend into the perfect ombre effect.
Located just over an hour away from Portland, Oregon, the Columbia River Gorge is an easy weekend or day trip, exponentially made even more festive in the fall.
White Mountains Of New Hampshire
One of New Hampshires biggest attractions is the impressive White Mountains which cover around a quarter of the state. Here you will find state parks, charming small towns, scenic parkways, mountain ranges, waterfalls, hiking trails, and so much more.
Popular activities here include taking a road trip along Kancamagus Highway, exploring Mount Washington, and riding the Alpine Slide at Attitash.
Yosemite National Park California
A visit to Yosemite National Park in the perfect October travel destination its a great time to miss the crowds of summer.
In October, one day in Yosemite National Park gets half the number of visitors as a typical summer day.
This means popular hiking trails are less crowded and parking in the Yosemite Valley is easier.
The draw in October? Trails in Glacier Point and Tioga Pass areas before the roads close for the season.
Dont miss hiking to Taft Point, Sentinel Dome, and Glacier Point. Exploring the shores of Tenaya Lake off Tioga Pass is a great way to spend a fall afternoon.
On a scenic drive around Yosemite Valley, you can spot yellows and oranges on many trees.
In the fall, the parks meadows change color too, painting the park in a beautiful shade of gold!Where to stay in Yosemite: Stay at adorable and peaceful Sage Cabin inside the park. Its just 15 minutes to the valley floor.

Sleepy Hollow New York
Getting There: 30-minute drive from Westchester County Airport
Why We Recommend It: Excellent cultural scene, spooky vibes, charming
Yes, Sleepy Hollow is a real place. TBD on whether its *actually* haunted, though, but you can plan a visit to the charming town this fall and find out for yourself. Don your favorite fall boots and scarf and spend your days strolling through the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery or visiting the Lighthouse or Philipsburg Manor. No matter how you spend your time, youll definitely feel all the spooky fall energy.
Nantucket And Martha’s Vineyard Massachussetts
A fall trip to the islands will always be quieter than a high-summer stay but this season, without either islands yearly half marathons or the Vineyards food and wine festival, thatll be especially true. Be sure to bring bikes no matter which island you choose. On Nantucket, six miles will get you to westernmost Madaket, where takeout Mexican food from Millies is your reward and sunsets never disappoint half that distance will take you from town to the southside beaches with wild waves. And on the Vineyard, walkable Edgartown is less than 10 miles from both ferry ports .
Nantuckets Cisco Brewers and a beer with a name like Whales Tail or Shark Tracker is a given for any fall afternoonas is a cocktail or dinner at a cozy restaurant like The Proprietors, where a reservation will be easier to come by in the evening.
Book a fabulous stay without the sky-high price tag at Life House, a new hotel just past Eastons Street White Elephant on Nantucket. On the Vineyard, Lark Hotels posh Edgartown propertiesThe Christopher, The Sydney, or The Richardall have to-die-for linens and provide easy access to shops, restaurants, and, if you get back on your bike, beaches and local farms . Blue Ridge Parkway North Carolina
It may be somewhat subjective to suggest that the Blue Ridge Parkway is the best road trip in the United States of America.
But when you consider the fact that the parkway, which stretches 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina, is the most popular unit of the US National Park system , there are stats to support the claim.
This epic scenic route was envisioned by FDR as part of his New Deal to provide jobs and improve American infrastructure.
Construction began in 1935 and was mostly done in 1966, but the incredible eight-mile stretch in North Carolina between the Linn Cove Viaduct and Grandfather Mountain wasnt finished until 1987.Its the longest linear park in the US, traveling through Jefferson, George Washington, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forests.
So naturally the area is at its most picturesque in mid to late October, when the autumn colors in the Blue Ridge region reach their most dynamic peak.
There are 200 remarkably scenic overlooks along the way, offering stunning mountain views, verdant valleys, and hiking trails to beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway waterfalls.
Theres also wildlife such as Black Bear, White-tailed Deer, Wild Turkeys, and countless other birds.
Driving the 45 mph speed limit without stopping, one could theoretically cover the entire route in around 15 hours.

Yellowstone National Park Wyoming
For the outdoor enthusiasts, late September, early October is ideal for visiting Yellowstone National Park, a gorgeous area in the northwest corner of Wyoming, United States.
Take the picturesque fall foliage against the backdrop of Mount Washburn or Gallatin Mountain Range. Youll skip the summer crowds and sneak in just before the first snowfall of the fall season.
Head over to Yellowstone National Park while the crowds are meager, and the wildlife is much more abundant. In fact, fall happens to be the mating season for elks and moose.
The mating call of the male elk sounds like a whistling roar and unlike anything youve ever heard. There are also guided tours to witness this phenomenon.
If mating calls dont excite you, see the geothermal features such as hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles.
While Old Faithful may be the most famous geyser, there are plenty of smaller geysers that are awe-inspiring. Make sure to check out alternative hot springs and geysers such as Pink Cone Geyser and Riverside Geyser.
The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is spectacular. It provides epic views if you are adventurous enough to hike either South or North Rim trails. Ideally, if you have enough time, you can hike both.
Dont miss out on visiting Artist Point, Point Sublime Hike at South Rim, and Inspiration Point and Lookout Point at North Rim.

Death Valley National Park California
As the largest national park in the contiguous United States, Death Valley National Park is exceptional in California.
Besides the sheer size of the park, Death Valley is also home to the lowest elevation point in the entire US at Badwater Basin, as well as home to sand dunes, badlands, desert landscapes, and mountainous terrain.
Much of the park lies in the Mojave Desert, which is also home to the neighboring Joshua Tree National Park, roughly four hours south.
Because Death Valley is mostly within the Mojave Desert, it is tough to visit during summer, with temperatures often above 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Best to visit in the fall when cooler temperatures roll in, and hiking is more possible around the park. Hiking in Death Valley can be as easy or difficult as you like, with trails ranging across all levels.
It begins with short half-mile hikes up to challenging 14-mile treks. Be sure to bring plenty of water, no matter the season.
If hiking is not for you, there is plenty to see throughout the park while driving around and stopping at viewpoints. The range of landscapes is unbelievable.
Both camping and resort-style lodging are available inside the park.

Why We Recommend It: Romantic getaway, charming, not too crowded
If you want a romantic fall weekend with your partner, look no further than Savannah, where the weather is perfect, the crowds are lighter and the Southern charm cannot be beat. Stroll through the Victorian District or the Starland Districts, take in the sights and pop into some of the local shops, galleries and incredible restaurants. Pick up some food and lounge in Forsyth Park for a picnic or dine at the famous Old Pink House.

Relaxing Fall Getaways In The United States
Our research is editorially independent but we may earn a commission for purchases made through our links.
Fall is a wonderful time to travel, often bringing idyllic weather with cool, crisp mornings and colorful foliage. It often means off-season discounts when it comes to everything from accommodation to airfare too, depending on your destination. This year, with many looking to stick a bit closer to home and avoid those long-haul flights, in particular, you might want to consider one of these relaxing getaways in the United States.
YOU’RE ALL SET!
While Aspen may be one of Colorados most famously beautiful mountain towns, its also one of the busiest and most pricey. Instead, consider Crested Butte, which offers all of the amenities without the crowds. As its rather isolated, located about 30 miles north of Gunnison in the heart of the Rockies, Its the ideal place to enjoy the tranquility and stunning autumn views along with activities like hiking, mountain biking, and world-class fishing. A fall fishing paradise, the Taylor River is renowned for its rainbow and brown trout fishing. Dont forget your camera as the area also boasts North Americas largest aspen grove with miles and miles of aspen stands that peek out among the evergreen trees.
Enjoy A Pumpkin Latte
Before spending a day at the ultra-popular Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta, stop at Red Cup Coffeehouse for a seasonal pumpkin latte. Red Cup is one of our favorite cafes in the heart of Boothbay Harbor as its equally historic, charming, and mildly kitschy. The fresh-baked goods, breakfast burritos, and house blends are all spectacular. They also craft the best seasonal drinks in town, including their spicy, mildly-sweet pumpkin latte served in a signature red mug.

Yosemite Is A Beautiful National Park For The Fall
One of my favorite fall trips is visiting Yosemite National Park in California. This stunning granite valley is perfect for anyone interested in outdoor activities such as climbing, hiking, or photography. It draws large crowds during the summer months, so from September onwards really is the best time to visit.
The evenings are cool and crisp, yet the days are warm and dry. This is the ideal climate for exploring nature, as you take on the world famous Half Dome hike, without sweltering under the sun or being eaten alive by mosquitoes!
Yosemite Valley is touted as the birthplace of modern rock climbing. There is a near-infinite supply of climbing all around, so be sure to bring your gear or contact a local climbing guide to shows you the ropes. If that sounds like hard work The Meadows, the large field area on the valley floor, is the best place for excellent people watching! Except the people are halfway up the 3,000 foot granite monolith that is El Capitan, the mountain featured in 2018s movie Free Solo. Bring your binoculars or take a peek through the telescopes set up for you and cheer on the climbers heading on their multi-day epics!

Fall Vacation Ideas: Sioux Falls
The changing color of the foliage and the slight chill in the air herald fall in South Dakota, the perfect time of year to plan a weekend getaway in picturesque Sioux Falls. You can start your weekend by exploring Falls Park, a 123-acre green space surrounding the waterfalls on the Big Sioux River. There are around 19 miles of hiking and biking paths surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, which should be particularly spectacular in the fall. Another good outdoor area for walking, biking and ball games is Terrace Park, and you can also get plenty of exercise on the hiking trails in Great Bear Recreational Park .
Art enthusiasts can visit the Washington Pavilion of Arts which contains an art gallery, theater and concert hall and features performances by the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society, among others.
