The NuvaRing, meanwhile, only has 28 days’ worth of hormones before it has to be replaced with a new one.
Keep in mind, though, this is not the FDA-approved use for these methods. “While it’s safe to do this, neither ring is FDA-approved for this method,” says Dr. Kelly-Jones.
Along the same lines, the birth control patch could technically be used in this way, as well. “Similarly, you can also use the birth control patch continuously by using a new patch every week, and on week four, place a new patch on your body to skip your period,” says Dr. Horton. However, it’s a great idea to keep your doctor in the loop if you plan to try any of these methodsnot only to get their go-ahead, but to make them away of any changes happening in your body.

How To Delay Your Period For Your Holiday

Technically speaking, you can do whatever you like when you’re on your period – from sex to swimming, you should never feel like anything is off limits to you because of your uterus. But between the cramps, the mood swings, the bloating, and obviously the bleeding, it’s also totes fair enough if your period and your holiday are not a match you want to make.

However, it might seem like a magical solution to all of your period-based problems, but as with any medication, Norethisterone is not without its caveats: Dr Kieran notes that it can cause side effects, and very rarely these can be serious – including increased risk of blood clotting, stroke, acne, fluid retention, headache and nausea.
First: Is It Safe To Delay Your Period At All
So there’s some good news here: You absolutely can delay your periodand do it in safe way. But that can only be done with one specific hormonal birth control method: the combination pill .
“A birth control pill has 21 days of hormones, usually ethinyl estradiol and progestin, and seven days of a placebo pill that prompts you to have an artificial period,”Alyse Kelly-Jones, MD, an ob-gyn in Charlotte, North Carolina, tells Health. “To delay your period, you would skip the placebo and immediately start a new pack of pills.”
Doing this for just one cycle can delay your period by as much as another three weeks, says Dr. Kelly-Jones. The only caveat is that you need to plan accordingly and with plenty of notice if you’re not already on hormonal birth control to begin with. “If you come to me two weeks out from your wedding or vacation and aren’t already on birth control, I probably won’t be able to help you,” she says. “At best, you might be able to delay it in time, but at worst, you might cause all kinds of irregular bleeding, which would be even less appealing.”
That’s because, with your birth control pills already in place, your body is like a well-oiled machine, while starting birth control from scratch can sometimes be a lengthy process to find one that works with your body to your liking.

Exercise The Right Way
Exercising regularly can help reduce the intensity of cramps and other symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, says Ross. Exercise may even reduce the frequency or length of your period. However, it’s also important to note that exercising too much or suddenly starting an intense new exercise routine can cause your period to stop or become more irregular.
What Are Other Ways To Delay Period Besides Pills
Women who, for various reasons, do not want to or cannot use hormonal contraception, can try to delay or make their period come faster using other methods, but you should be aware that these methods are not as effective as oral hormonal contraception. Homemade methods to shift menstruation include:
Herbal infusions, especially common yarrow or black hollyhock infusions
Using the above methods, you can try to speed up your period by a few or dozen or so hours, but the likelihood of succeeding is not very high.
Proponents of natural medicine recommend using high doses of vitamin C to delay menstruation, but this method is neither scientifically proven, nor is it very effective. What is more, bear in mind that vitamin C surplus can contribute to the development of kidney stones.

Again, only skip your bleed for 12 weeks in a row if youre using a patch. You can use the system of skipping for 12 weeks, having a bleed and then skipping for 12 weeks again before having another bleed.
However, breakthrough bleeding or spotting may occur. If this happens, what you need to do next will depend on what method of birth control you use. For the pill, stop taking the pill and then restart on day 6. For the ring, keep your ring out for 5 days and use a new right on day six. For the patch, remove your patch and place a new patch on your body on day 7.

Taking 2 Packets Of The Combined Pill Back
If you take a combined contraceptive pill, you can delay your period by taking 2 packets back-to-back.
How you do this will depend on which pill you take.
- monophasic 21-day pills, such as Microgynon and Cilest you take a combined pill for 21 days, followed by 7 days without pills, when you have a bleed . To delay your period, start a new packet of pills straight after you finish the last pill and miss out the 7-day break.
- everyday pills, such as Microgynon ED and Lorynon ED you take a combined pill every day. The first 21 pills are active pills and the next 7 pills are inactive or dummy pills, when you have your period. To delay your period, miss out and throw away the dummy pills, and start the active pills in a new packet straight away.
- phasic 21-day pills, such as Binovium, Qlaira and Logynon the mix of hormones in each pill is different, depending on which phase you’re in. You need to take these pills in the correct order to have effective contraception. Ask your pharmacist, community contraception clinic or GP for more information.
Taking your contraceptive pills in the ways described above will not affect how they work as contraceptives.
