What is Going on with Walt Disney World? Disney’s Cancellation Policies

If youre visiting Walt Disney World during less busy times of the year, like early January, February, September , then youre safe to stay at a Value Resort and save some money. We highly recommend Pop Century Resort as its one of the best and now also on the Skyliner Gondola line. A word of warning though, during busy times of the year and through the summer months, value resorts are filled to the brim with school groups, spring breakers, and international groups and can be very noisy and busy.

How Close To My Disney Trip Can I Cancel

If you purchased a Disney vacation package, the amount of money you get back if you cancel will depend on how close to your trip you are. For cancellations made 30 days or more before the arrival date, you will get back amounts paid minus any cancellation fee and non-refundable air, hotel, or travel protection plan costs assessed by third-party providers.

If you cancel 2 to 29 days before arrival day, in addition to the above, there will be a $200 per package cancellation fee.

If you cancel 1 day or less before arrival or you are a no-show, the full price of the package will be non-refundable.

However, Disney may allow refunds at its sole discretion. You may need to pay a processing fee to have your case assessed. The request for a refund must be made in writing within 90 days of the departure date on the Disney package.

Stay On Disney Property In 2022

While we dont usually make a blanket statement regarding the Disney On vs. Off-Property discussion. But in 2022, it will be important to be on property at Walt Disney World. Why? Because there are A LOT of CHANGES at Walt Disney World right now. While we dont know all the perks that will be available to Disney Resort Guests, Early Theme Park Entry is currently available and will be helpful during busy times. We also dont know if Disney will release an interim transportation option to cover the Magical Express loss. Or if the Free Disney Dining Plan will come available in 2022. To take advantage of any of these things you will need to be a Disney Resort Guest.

Transportation From The Airport In 2022

If youre planning to fly in to Orlando and you wont be renting a car, youll need to get from the airport to your resort.

Disneys Magical Express will no longer be available in 2022.

Unfortunately, the free option Disney used to offer to get from the airport to your Disney resort will be discontinued in 2022. They may or may not introduce something else but for now youll need to look at other options. If youre not a renting a car you could use a rideshare like Uber or Lyft, a shuttle company like Mears, or hire a private car service. The best option for you will depend on your budget, the size of your family, if you need a car seat accommodated, etc.

Are You Adding A Park Hopper Ticket

The Walt Disney World Park Hopper Ticket is an extra add-on ticket per length of your stay, so can get very pricey as an extra perk if you have several people in your travel party. The Park Hopper Ticket allows you access to more than one park per day and is an added convenience. As Walt Disney World is made up of 4 parks, this could allow you to spend your morning at one of them and your evening at another. We usually skip purchasing this ticket and plan for one park per day. There is so much to do in each Disney Park that it feels inopportune to leave halfway through the day.

However, if youre trying for a short Disney trip and will not get all the parks in during your vacation, then this may be a ticket you consider.

Disney World Tips For 2022

I have lots of good tips about traveling to Disney and trip planning elsewhere on this website but Ill quickly highlight my top 5 tips for planning a Disney World vacation in 2022 specifically:

  • Plan ahead and plan early. People have been home long enough, many of them have stimulus checks, and they are ready to travel. Revenge travel is real so stay ahead of things by booking early.
  • Use a GOOD travel agent who specializes in Disney. It doesnt have to be me, but book through someone who really knows their stuff. Things are constantly changing at Disney World right now and even stuff I wrote 2 months ago can be outdated. I do my best to keep the website updated but if you want to be sure to have all the firsthand info booking your trip through me or another agent so Im only an email away is the best way to stay up on it all.
  • Consider visiting during the summer. I know, its hot. But if lower crowds are a priority the summer is actually going to be a decent time to go. The past few years its been getting less crowded in favor of better weather months like October and March. Combine that with the fact that this past year many people realize their jobs are more flexible and they can work remotely and even some kids have switched the homeschooling or virtual school. Also in the past few years weve seen the year round school calendar become a more popular option. There are fewer people who are locked into visiting during July and August now.
  • Will You Want To Be In The Parks Every Day Of Your Vacation

If youre looking to save some money at Disney consider exploring the parts of Walt Disney World that dont include a park day. We love taking time to meander through the Fort Wilderness Campgrounds and stop by Wilderness Lodge for a coffee. Planning a Disney Monorail Resort day or Disney Boardwalk Resort day are also things we like to do regularly. Heading to Disney Springs and boating over for beignets at Port Orleans French Quarter gives you an insiders look at all things Walt Disney World and can really make your trip feel more than just a checklist. Choosing this route for a typical 8-day vacation could easily have only 5 tickets allowing you a few days to be outside of the parks.

Will The Dining Plan Be Available In 2022

While we tend to have a love/hate relationship with Disney Dining Plans, the loss of these in 2020 and 2021 has had us mourning the loss. An easy way to pay for your Disney food ahead of time, the Disney Dining Plan may return to Walt Disney World in 2022 as they get a handle on crowds, demand, and if this is a monetarily good move for the Walt Disney Company. Frankly, we always feel like just paying for food as you go is cheaper and easier, BUT, we absolutely adore that on the Disney Dining Plan we can often frequent restaurants we may not have considered due to the cost. We do not know if the Dining Plan will return in 2022 but will be updating this post as we learn more.

Did The Price At Disney World Increase In 2022

Disney World’s hurricane policy: How you can get your money back

If you read my blog often or youre on my email list, you hopefully know Im honest about things I dont see any point in beating around the bush because its just not helpful to anyone. The answer to this is not necessarily as straightforward as it sounds, but if you want a yes or no then yes, the prices at Disney World increased overall in 2022.

But there are some exceptions. Disney has moved to a more dynamic form of pricing, meaning that everything is more date-dependent than it used to be. This has been the case for the resorts for a long time, but a few years ago they switched their ticket pricing system so that prices vary based on your dates.

Just taking a quick snapshot of June 2021 vs. June 2022 we can see the prices have changed slightly, usually just by $2-3 dollars. This is pricing per day for a 4 day ticket so the difference in pretty negligible. Youll see about the same for other months and dates, though there may be rare occasions where the 2022 price is a few dollars cheaper.

Resorts are more or less the same when youre looking at the rack rate . Discounts are what really make the difference and Disney typically releases those a few months ahead of time so they can adjust based on how they are selling. So overall the pricing for 2022 is about the same as 2021, but I expect fewer discounts to be offered in 2022 due to more people feeling comfortable traveling again.

Disney World Vacation Package Cancellation Policy

A Disney World Vacation Package is a bundle that includes your resort, tickets, and possibly the dining plan. There are more specific parameters with the Disney World vacation package cancellation policy.

Cancellations 30 Days or More in Advance

You can cancel your Disney vacation package 30 or more days in advance with no repercussions. Any amount you have already paid up to this point is refunded. If you booked through a third party, and not directly through Disney, you may have to pay cancellation fees. This would be based on the rules of the 3rd party vendor.

Cancellations 2 to 29 Days in Advance of Check-in

If you have to cancel a trip less than a month before your check-in date, the refund policy begins to change. At this point, you are refunded any money youve paid towards that trip, minus $200. Disney essentially keeps the original $200 deposit you put down on the vacation package.

Again, this does not take into consideration any fees you may have to pay to third party vendors involved in your bookings.

Cancellations 1 Day or Less and No Shows

If you truly wait until the last minute, or just dont show up at all, you end up with the least desirable outcome. At that point in time, the full price of the vacation is non-refundable.

Future Impact On Rides & Economy

The bottom line is Disney is already losing hundreds of millions of dollars because of Disney World and the other parks being closed. A company as big as Disney can afford to take some losses, but if it continues for an extended period of time they will have a much bigger problem on their hands.

In fact, weve come up with a list of upcoming Disney projects that could be cut or delayed due to this closure and loss of revenue.

The volatility on Wall Street is already starting to be reflected with The Walt Disney Company dropping over the last few days and is down around 15% so far this year. The Disney stock price fell down to a low of $85 per share during this period and even though its rebounded some, most experts are expecting it to continue to slide lower in the near-term. Some of this is due to Bob Iger stepping down and being replaced by Bob Chapek, but its also all the uncertainly created by the uncertainty of the markets and Disneys bottom line right now.

Right now they are looking at losing hundreds of millions of dollars this quarter between Shanghai, Hong Kong and now Tokyo, and those numbers are going up every day. Not to mention how much money they are now going lose with Disney World and Disneyland being forced to close down for at least a couple of months.

Budget cuts in the parks have already been a sore subject with Disney fans for some time now, imagine what is going to happen when we see even less maintenance in the parks or risk losing new attractions.

    More Tips For Rescheduling

We usually dont purchase travel insurance as it tends to be a waste of money. In this time, however, we would recommend it to whoever is planning a trip to Disney World or anywhere else for that matter. .

Make sure you get the right policy that lets you cancel at any time. That way you can get your money back even if Disney hasnt closed the parks.

Right now we dont recommend booking any deals that dont offer you a guaranteed 100% money-back refund. Its just too risky right now not knowing what is going to happen in the coming weeks.

Also, we highly recommend using a Disney travel agent when booking your trip. They can help you to deal with any room cancellations for you and will make your life a whole lot easier.

You also might want to consult our Disney Crowd Calendar for 2020 and 2021 which explains the dates to go when the parks are the least crowded.

    Disney World Ticket Refund Policy

In general, Disney park tickets are non-transferrable and non-refundable, except in the case of the Disney hurricane policy . If you have a Disney vacation package, the tickets are considered a part of the package and will be refunded through that as described above.

However, there is a workaround to this situation. While it wont get you a refund, it will help you salvage the ticket for another trip. If you go into your My Disney Experience account to look at your tickets and see a change ticket link, you are in luck. This allows you to modify that ticket to a different type of ticket, or to change the dates.

Now, some of this is a little unconfirmed. You wont really see this written anywhere as an official Disney World ticket refund policy. And its not a refund, its moving your tickets to another date. And if the tickets for your new dates cost more than your original tickets, you will have to pay the difference. If the tickets are cheaper than your original dates, you get no money back.

This strategy works for any park ticket linked to My Disney Experience. It doesnt matter if you bought it through Undercover Tourist or direct from Disney.

When in doubt, call and talk with a Cast Member. They have been known to sprinkle a fair amount of pixie dust whenever possible.

    Disney World 2022 Crowd Calendar

As of right now its still hard to speculate about what crowds might be like next year Disney is still at reduced capacity and there are 50-60k new cases of COVID per day in the country, which might make people hesitant to travel. Restrictions and slower vaccinations in other countries also affect crowd levels. Im hoping to be able to share some crowd calendars in the coming months when we have a little bit more reliable information, so stay tuned!
