If the stereotypical Hawaiian seaside mega-resort doesn’t appeal to your beach bum sensibilities, set your sights at Kona Coast. Kona Coast offers a taste of the Hawaii of old, before the invasion of hotel chains and supermalls. Here you’ll find secret coves, secluded artists’ enclaves, forest-covered hills, vast lava deserts, and hectares upon hectares of coffee farms. The looming presence of the Mauna Loa and Hualalai volcanoes add a thrilling sense of living on the edge. In Kailua itself, there’s Hulihee Palace, the 19th-century Victorian splendour that served as home to Hawaiian royalty. Near Kona Airport is Kaloko-Honokohau Park, the site of an ancient Hawaiian settlement. South of Kailua is Kealakekua Bay, where Captain James Cook, the first British explorer to set foot on Hawaii, met his end at the hands of Native Hawaiian warriors. And there’s Puukohola Heiau, the temple built by Hawaii’s great unifier, King Kamehameha I.

Where Is Kona Hi
