Taos Vacation Rentals: Issues About Taxes Trends
Kay thinks vacation rentals are a better deal than hotels. Last week, she skied three days, cooked all of her meals at the rental, and had more room to get comfortable.
Though hard to track accurately, most in the local accommodations industry believe vacation rentals around Taos are increasing in popularity. Many think a glut of mostly vacant second homes means there are now plenty of vacation rental options. And in a still-shaky economy, tourists are looking for a cheaper way to travel.
But some hoteliers and bed-and-breakfast owners argue that these homes-away-from-home have an unfair advantage over more traditional lodging establishments. Local governments have also had to seek out vacation rental owners to collect on lodgers tax that otherwise goes uncollected.
Its value
Ryan Goodman, with Kokopelli Real Estate and Property Management, said Taos vacation rental market is undoubtedly growing. He says people like Kay chose a home or condo over a hotel room for one basic reason. Its value, he said.
Goodman said Kokopelli represents about 20 properties around Taos. This spring break, Goodman said the company had between 60 and 80 percent occupancy in those units a vast improvement over last year.
